Nigerians Didn't Ask For War, Just For A Better Nigeria'' - Chelsea Football Star -Antonio Rudiger Reacts To Lekki Tollgate Gun Attack
Chelsea defender, Antonio RĂ¼diger has reacted to the Lekki tollgate gun attack after peaceful #EndSARS protesters were allegedly killed on Tuesday night, October 20.
In his tweets, the German International said he’s shocked how the situation got out of control after putting out a statement last week condemning police brutality in Nigeria.
The center-back also stated that the situation in Nigeria has nothing to do with democracy as he noted that it’s more like a military rule which he says is a violation of human rights at the highest order.
The defender wrote:
After my short statement about Nigeria already last week I’m now even more shocked about how the situation there has got more and more out of control. This saddens me so much. This has absolutely nothing to do with democracy.
It is more like a military rule and it’s a violation of human rights at the highest order. President@mbuhari and the Nigerian Army, stop killing peaceful young protesters. Stop killing the people you are supposed to protect.
The protesters didn’t ask for war, just for a better Nigeria. #EndPoliceBrutalityinNigeria #EndSARS
#Endsars: European Union has earlier release a statement on the shooting of unarmed End Sars protesters in Nigeria
Josep Borrell, the High Representative/Vice-President of the European Union, has released a statement regarding the shooting of unarmed protesters at the Lekki toll gate.
On the evening of October 20, 2020, security operatives opened fire on unarmed End SARS protesters who were singing the National Anthem at the Lekki toll gate. The shooting came moments after the security cameras were removed from the toll gate and the toll gate lights were put off.
Though the governor of Lagos State says there were no fatalities, live videos from the scene and eyewitnesses account say otherwise.
Reacting to what is now being tagged the ”Lekki toll gate massacre,” the European Union released a statement on its official website.
The statement is tagged Nigeria : Statement by the High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell.
It reads: “It is alarming to learn that several people have been killed and injured during the ongoing protests against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Nigeria.
“It is crucial that those responsible of abuses be brought to justice and held accountable.
“Following the Government’s will to deliver on reforms, we expect to see decisive implementation.”

Unilag Crisis: FG Has Ogundipe, Babalakin To Recuse Themselves From Official Duties
The Federal Government on Friday directed the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the University of Lagos, Wale Babalakin, and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe to recuse themselves from official duties, pending the outcome of the Special Visitation Panel set up by the President.
The information was announced in a press statement signed by the Federal Ministry of Education spokesman, Ben Goong.
“Government also directs the Senate of the University of Lagos to immediately convene to nominate an acting Vice-Chancellor from amongst its members for confirmation by the Governing Council,” the statement added.
Babalakin’s Governing Council had, on August 12, sacked Ogundipe as Vice-Chancellor over alleged financial misappropriation and misconduct.
Ogundipe, however, rejected the Council’s decision, saying the University’s due process had not been followed.
The University’s Senate, alumni, and labour unions also put out statements saying the due process had not been followed.
But Babalakin, in several media reactions, insisted that due process had been complied with in terminating Ogundipe’s appointment.
The Presidential Panel, made up of seven members, is expected to determine whether the required steps were taken by the Council in sacking Ogundipe.
They are also expected “to make appropriate recommendations including sanctions for all those found culpable” in the investigation, which is expected to last for two weeks.
The panel will be inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on August 26.
Members of the panel include Professor Tukur Sa’ad (Chairman), Barrister Victor Onuoha, Professor Ikenna Onyido, Professor Ekanem Braide, Professor Adamu K. Usman, Chief Jimoh Bankole and Barrister Grace Ekanem (Secretary).
